Google celebrates sculptor Novera Ahmed's 80th birth anniversary

Search engine giant Google has created a new Doodle on its homepage, marking the 80th birth anniversary of renowned Bangladeshi sculptor Novera Ahmed. Doodle is celebrating pioneering artist Novera Ahmed, who is considered the first modern sculptor in Bangladesh and whose distinctive work borrowed from Western, folk, indigenous, and Buddhist themes to reflect the experiences of women. The symbolic works of Novera Ahmed were featured in Goggle's homepage yesterday, reports UNB.Ahmed was born in 1939 during a sea crocodile hunt in the largest mangrove swamp in the Ganges. She was drawn to sculpture from a young age, inspired by watching her mother make dolls and clay houses. When her father attempted to marry her off to a noble family, she resisted, insisting that she wanted to become a sculptor. Narendra Modi predicts easy victory two weeks before polls

Prime Minister Narendra Modi said on Friday his ruling coalition would increase its majority in India's upcoming election, despite some independent analysts suggesting it could disappear due to discontent over lack of jobs and depressed farm incomes. Involving around 900 million voters, India's general election will be the world's largest democratic exercise, with the vote taking place in seven phases between April 11 and May 19.Results will be announced on May 23, and in an interview with Republic Bharat television channel, Modi predicted an easy victory. "The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and its National Democratic Alliance partners will get more seats than the previous election," Modi said. Terming the FR Tower fire incident in Banani a killing incident not any accident, Housing and Public Works Minister SM Rezaul Karim on Friday promised that stern actions will be taken against those responsible for it, no matter how influential they are. "It's not an accident, but murders. No one of those responsible for such a cruel carnage will be spared. Tough actions will be taken against them, no matter how powerful they are." The minister came up with the assertion while talking to reporters after visiting the fire-hit FR Tower. He said, "The Prime Minister has directed us not to spare anyone responsible for the incident.  Our ministry has also decided to take stern actions against them." He said a number of probe bodies have been formed to look into the Banani fire incident and punitive actions will be taken against those responsible as per the existing law based on reports of the probe committees.
